Ditch the easy button! Modern life is designed for convenience—instant deliveries, endless entertainment, and dopamine hits on demand. But is all this ease actually making us unhappier?
In this episode of Reflect Forward, I explore why doing hard things every day is the key to fulfillment, resilience, and long-term success. When we take the easy route, we rob ourselves of the growth, confidence, and sense of accomplishment that comes from pushing through discomfort.
We also explore the science of dopamine and how it drives our motivation. The problem is that we constantly overstimulate our brains with quick dopamine fixes—social media, substances, shopping, and our phones—making it harder to stay focused, energized, and truly satisfied. I’ll explain why working for your dopamine is essential and how a dopamine fast can reset your brain and reignite your motivation.

Try This Challenge
1. Start Small – Build Momentum with Micro-Wins
One of the biggest reasons people avoid hard things is that they seem too big or daunting. But every difficult accomplishment starts with a small step. If you want to develop a habit of embracing challenges, start with something manageable. For example, Instead of saying, “I’ll work out for an hour every day,” start with 10 minutes. Or, instead of committing to writing a book, start with one page a day.
2. Embrace Discomfort – Train Your Brain for Growth
Discomfort is a sign of growth, not failure. But most of us are conditioned to avoid struggle because we associate it with pain rather than progress. The truth? The more you lean into discomfort, the stronger you become. Think about any skill or accomplishment in your life—did it come by hitting the easy button? Or did it come from pushing yourself past what felt comfortable?
3. Reset Your Brain – Try a Dopamine Fast
A dopamine fast helps reset your brain’s sensitivity to rewards, making hard work feel more satisfying.
Here’s how to do it:
- Pick a time frame – Start with 24 hours, a weekend, or even a whole week.
- Eliminate quick dopamine sources – No social media, junk food, mindless scrolling, or impulse shopping.
- Replace with effort-based rewards – Exercise, journaling, cooking from scratch, deep conversations, reading, meditation.
