Meet People Where They Are Without Lowering the Bar

In this week’s episode of Reflect Forward, I unpack one of the most common and misunderstood phrases in leadership: “meet people where they are.”

It sounds simple, but in practice, most leaders get it wrong. When someone is struggling or not meeting expectations, we tend to do one of two things. We either lower the bar in the name of compassion, or we get frustrated when they don’t rise. Neither approach works.

The real issue is this. We think we are meeting people where they are, but we are actually meeting them where we are.

I use a GPS metaphor to explain this. Leadership is not about starting from where you wish someone was. It is about starting from their actual location. If you get the starting point wrong, every direction after that will be wrong too.

Meeting someone where they are means understanding their reality without judgment or projection. It is their emotional state, their capacity, their mindset, and what they can actually hear and act on in that moment. It is not agreement, and it is not lowering the standard. It is an accurate diagnosis before action.

Where this breaks down for most leaders is a lack of curiosity. If you are not asking questions, you are guessing. And when you guess, you project your own lens onto the situation, which creates misalignment and frustration on both sides.

In this episode, I walk through how to balance empathy and accountability without compromising either. The key is learning how to calibrate your approach. The destination stays the same, but the route often needs to change.

Key takeaways:

  • Meeting people where they are starts with curiosity, not assumption
  • Empathy without accountability creates stagnation
  • Accountability without empathy creates disconnection
  • Great leaders do not lower the bar. They get better at helping people reach it

Mic drop moments:

  • If you do not meet people where they are, then you are meeting them where you are
  • If you are not asking questions, you are guessing, not leading
  • The destination does not change. Only the route does
  • Leadership is not about getting people to think like you. It is about getting results through people who do not

If you have ever felt frustrated that someone is not rising to your expectations, this episode will challenge how you are thinking about leadership and give you a more effective way to lead.
