Recently, I had a dream that has me thinking about ambition, both the good side and the dark side. I was in an airport, desperately trying to catch a flight, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t run. My legs felt heavy as if I were wading through quicksand and my muscles were made of concrete. Every minute that passed created more stress and anxiety. I had places to be, things to achieve, and people relying on me. But no matter how much I willed my legs to move, they wouldn’t go any faster. In fact, the harder I tried, the more exhausted I became, which slowed me down to an impossibly slow pace. I was so tired, yet my ambition pushed me to catch that flight. I watched helplessly as the plane I was supposed to be on took off without me, so frustrated and angry. When I reflected on this dream, the message was clear: my ambition drives me forward at full speed, but if I don’t slow down, relax and balance it with self-care, I’ll burn out before I ever reach my destination.

Dreams tell us so much about our waking lives and this one was no different. Like you, I have big goals and push myself hard to achieve them. But ambition without balance is a recipe for exhaustion, and I see so many leaders and high achievers struggle with this balance. Heck, I still struggle with it, and my mantra is “Self-care is a discipline, not a luxury.” We chase success relentlessly yet forget to take care of ourselves along the way. That’s why, in 2025, I believe we need to rethink ambition—not as an all-consuming force, but as a tool we wield with intention, responsibility, and self-awareness.

The Power of Ambition: How It Fuels Growth

Ambition has shaped my journey as CEO of StoneAge. It has pushed me to learn, to grow, and to take risks that have paid off in incredible ways. I would never have become a CEO at the age of 30, disrupted our industry multiple times, written a book, created a podcast, and built a high-profile speaking career without some serious ambition. When harnessed correctly, ambition is one of the most potent forces for success. Here’s why:

1. It Pushes You to Grow

Ambition forces us to stretch beyond our comfort zones and continuously evolve. I had no formal business training when I stepped into my leadership role at StoneAge. But I had ambition—I was hungry to learn, improve, and prove to myself that I could build a company and lead myself and others well. That relentless drive helped me build the skills I needed to transform the company into a thriving, growing, and valuable employee-owned business.

2. It Inspires Others

Ambition isn’t just about personal success—it’s about creating something bigger than yourself. I talk about this often on my Reflect Forward podcast often. The best leaders use their ambition to inspire innovation and ownership within their teams. When employees see a leader who is ambitious for the right reasons, they rise to the challenge and embrace their own potential.

3. It Builds Resilience

The world is changing faster than ever. AI, economic shifts, and evolving workplace cultures demand adaptability. Ambition, when fueled by purpose and resilience, helps us push through challenges instead of being paralyzed by them. I’ve faced countless setbacks in my career, but my ambition has always kept me moving forward, creating the ability to not just bounce back from adversity but bounce forward.

4. Ambition Leads to Success as Long as You Focus Your Effort

At the end of the day, ambition alone doesn’t create success—consistent effort and execution do. The most ambitious people aren’t just dreamers; they are doers. They put in the work, stay focused on their goals, and deliver results.

I’ve always believed that success is a byproduct of showing up and doing the work, even when it’s hard. Ambition without discipline leads to frustration, but ambition paired with persistence creates unstoppable momentum. I didn’t grow StoneAge into an industry leader by sitting back and hoping for success—I made it happen by committing to growth, setting clear goals, and following through.

In a world full of distractions, focus is a competitive advantage. Ambitious people don’t just talk about what they want; they take action. They eliminate excuses, prioritize what truly matters, and make progress every single day. When ambition is paired with consistent action, results follow. That’s the real formula for success.

The Dark Side of Ambition: When Drive Becomes Destructive

As powerful as ambition is, it can also be a double-edged sword. Left unchecked, it can lead to burnout, strained relationships, and even ethical compromises. My dream about missing the flight was a warning—when ambition is imbalanced, it can feel like you’re constantly chasing something just out of reach, never quite arriving.

Here are some of the biggest pitfalls of unchecked ambition:

1. Burnout: The High Cost of Overdrive

Ambitious people are often their own worst enemies when it comes to rest. The drive to achieve more, be more, and do more can push us past our limits, making exhaustion feel like an inevitable side effect of success. I used to believe that working harder and longer was the only way to prove my worth as a leader, but that mindset left me depleted.

Burnout doesn’t just steal your energy—it steals your joy. You can hit every milestone and still feel empty inside because you’ve sacrificed your well-being along the way. If ambition turns into a relentless need to always be achieving, it stops being a strength and becomes a liability.

2. Tunnel Vision: Losing Sight of What Matters

One of the biggest dangers of unchecked ambition is that it can cause you to become so fixated on a goal that you ignore everything else. Relationships suffer, personal well-being is neglected, and sometimes, even ethical lines get blurred.

I’ve met leaders who became so obsessed with hitting revenue targets that they lost sight of the bigger picture—culture, integrity, and sustainability. I’ve seen professionals climb the corporate ladder only to realize, once they reached the top, that they had sacrificed their relationships and health along the way. I’ve certainly spent too many nights away from my son Jack as I continue to build StoneAge and pursue my passions for speaking and writing. Just this past year, he reminded me that I missed his school’s Christmas program four years in a row. I work to find balance and be present when I am home to make up for the times I am not.

When ambition blinds us to what truly matters, success can feel hollow.

3. Never Feeling “Enough”

One of the most insidious effects of ambition is that it can create a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction. You hit one goal, but instead of celebrating, you immediately set your sights on the next one. The finish line keeps moving, and no achievement ever feels enough. I discuss this concept in my The Gap vs. The Gain episode of Reflect Forward. You are never happy with your progress when you measure yourself by how far you have left to go (the gap).

I’ve experienced this firsthand. No matter how much success I achieved, I used to feel like I should be doing more. It was only when I started redefining success on my own terms and measuring myself on how far I’ve come (the gain) that I realized ambition should fuel fulfillment, not endless dissatisfaction.

4. The Isolation of Constant Striving

Ambition, when it turns inward and becomes all-consuming, can isolate you from the people who matter most. I’ve seen leaders push so hard for success that they alienate their teams, friends, and families. I’ve done this myself and it’s part of what caused my marriage to fail. I recognize that the constant striving is something I must constantly manage. When everything revolves around your goals, you stop being present for those around you.

I don’t want to be the kind of person, mother, partner and leader so focused on what’s next that I forget to appreciate what’s now. That’s why I’m more focused than ever on balancing ambition with connection—whether through my team, my loved ones, or my personal well-being—it is crucial for long-term success and happiness.

How to Harness Ambition in 2025

So how do we ensure ambition remains a powerful, positive force rather than a runaway train? Here are five key takeaways to harness ambition effectively in 2025:

1. Adopt an Ownership Mindset

Success doesn’t happen to us—we create it. That’s what The Ownership Mindset is all about. It means taking full responsibility for our actions, decisions, impact, and quality of our relationships. If something isn’t working in our careers or lives, we have two choices: blame external factors or take ownership and change course. Additionally, The Ownership Mindset is about developing the self-awareness to know when you need to pull back, be present, and take care of your health and relationships.

When you own your ambition in a healthy, balanced way, you lead yourself well and inspire others to do the same.

To apply this:

  • Own your choices and take action—stop waiting for opportunities and create them.
  • Set boundaries to avoid burnout—protect your energy by prioritizing rest and relationships.
  • Lead yourself first—model accountability, resilience, and integrity in everything you do.

2. Embrace a Learning Mentality

The most ambitious people aren’t just chasing success—they’re constantly evolving. In a rapidly changing world, those who resist learning will fall behind. Make it a priority to seek out new knowledge daily, whether through reading, conversations, or self-reflection.

To apply this:

  • Stay curious—ask better questions.
  • Seek feedback, even when it’s uncomfortable.
  • Admit what you don’t know and commit to filling the gaps.

3. Align Ambition with Purpose

Too often, people chase goals that don’t truly fulfill them. Ambition without purpose is like climbing a ladder that’s leaning against the wrong wall. Before you invest years of your life in a pursuit, ask:

  • Does this goal align with my core values?
  • Is this ambition about more than just me?
  • Will this bring meaning to my life?

When ambition is tied to purpose, it becomes an unstoppable force for good.

4. Prioritize Execution Over Perfection

Ambition isn’t about having the perfect plan—it’s about taking action. Too many people get stuck in analysis paralysis, waiting for certainty before they move forward. The truth is clarity comes from progress, not planning.

To harness ambition:

  • Break big goals into small, actionable steps.
  • Stop waiting for “perfect” conditions—start now.
  • Learn as you go and course-correct along the way.

5. Build a Strong Support System

No one achieves success alone. The most ambitious people surround themselves with mentors, peers, and teams that challenge and support them.

Ask yourself:

  • Who in my life pushes me to be better?
  • Who in my life provides honest feedback?
  • Am I surrounded by people who energize me or drain me and what can I do to ensure I am spending this with those who energize me?

If you don’t have a strong support system, build one. Seek out people who inspire you and cut ties with relationships that no longer serve your growth.

Final Thoughts

My dream about missing the flight wasn’t just a random vision—it was a reflection of what happens when ambition is unbalanced. In 2025, success won’t just belong to those who push the hardest. It will belong to those who learn to balance ambition with self-care, purpose, and integrity.
