Who is really running your decisions? The version of you that believes you are rational and intentional, or the version shaped by years of conditioning you barely remember?

In this episode of Reflect Forward, I sit down with Yvonne Trost, a former global business and IT strategist turned Subconscious Performance Coach and Certified Hypnotherapist. After more than two decades advising Fortune 500 companies and federal agencies, Yvonne concluded that traditional leadership development challenges: the real constraints are not strategic. They are subconscious, and she asks the question, “Who’s really running your decisions?”

This conversation matters because it presses on something I care deeply about. I teach the Ownership Mindset. I believe in taking full responsibility for your results. But if most of our behavior is automated by the time we reach adulthood, then ownership has to go deeper than willpower and awareness.

We explore how early conditioning shapes the meanings we assign to experiences, and how those meanings become a default operating system. Overworking. Perfectionism. Control. Avoidance. These are not character flaws. They are protection strategies the subconscious believes are keeping you safe.

Yvonne shares her framework of “realize, recode, rewrite,” grounded in neuroplasticity and memory reconsolidation. The premises are simple but confronting. Insight alone does not create change. The conscious mind may want something different, but the subconscious mind is designed to resist risk, even when that risk leads to freedom.

One metaphor from this episode stayed with me. Imagine the boardroom of your mind. You may have one voice advocating for change, but nine and a half voices are committed to staying exactly where you are because staying the same feels safe. That is why we repeat patterns long after we have outgrown them.

If you have ever wondered why you can see the pattern but still cannot break it, this episode will give you language for what is happening beneath the surface.

Key Takeaways

1. Most self-sabotage is a protection strategy. Your subconscious is trying to keep you alive, not necessarily fulfilled.

2. Awareness is necessary but not sufficient. Change requires engaging the part of the mind that resists it.

3. Ownership must be embodied. Responsibility is not just about knowing better. It is about rewiring the beliefs driving your behavior.

4. It is not the event that shapes you. It is the meaning your brain attached to it, then reinforced over time.

5. Reflecting forward means creating your future in the present rather than recycling the past as your operating system.

Mic Drop Moments

1. “Nine and a half of the ten people in the boardroom of your mind are against change, and logic will not persuade them.”

2. “Your subconscious does not care if you are happy or successful. It cares that you stay alive, which makes it deeply resistant to risk.”

3. “You do not get what you want. You get what you are.”
